Play therapy is a type of counseling used for young people. Young children often do not have the insight or understanding to be able to express themselves in a primarily verbal way in counseling. Children will naturally communicate their experiences and knowledge through play. By playing out what is going on in their lives, they develop understanding and acceptance of themselves and their environment. Play therapy allows children to express themselves in a natural, self-guided, self-healing way that mirrors the way adults talk out their issues in a therapy session.
As adults often feel and function better by talking through their issues with someone who listens to and validates them, children can feel the same relief during play therapy. Children do not need to be prompted by the therapist to play out certain issues. Their play will address these concerns automatically. Play therapists are trained to respond to a child's play in a way that encourages personal expression and reflects understanding of a child's experience. For many children, play therapy is the fastest route to positive change and healing.
